Recreation and leisure activities are critical dimensions of the quality of life for all people. They serve as a vehicle to have fun, meet new friends and develop skills. Enrolling in a recreational activity can be beneficial in teaching critical life-long socialization skills.
There are many ways to enjoy your community, including: volunteering, joining a group focused on activities you enjoy, taking a class, learning a new hobby or joining a gym or fitness center.

Adolph and Rose Levis Jewish Community Center – Helene & Roy Schwedelson Special Needs Program. Schwedelson Young Adult Social Scene (18-29), Schwedelson Sunday Social Scene (30-50’s) – Social groups for adults functioning at a high level of independence in community settings. Participants enjoy a variety of weekly activities as they meet new friends, enhance social relationships and cultivate vital life skills.

Peter Blum Family YMCA of Boca Raton – Chase Donoff Special Needs Program (“Chase’s Place”) provides an inclusive, enriching, instructional and recreational experience for children, teens and adults with disabilities and special needs.
FAU (Florida Atlantic University) CARD (Center for Autism and Related Disabilities), Adult Social Groups. Adults with an autism spectrum disorder ages 18 and older are welcome. Groups will meet at various community locations to discuss issues, problem solve and form friendships.
Friendship Circle of North Broward and South Palm Beach County, Young Adult Division (YAD) and Friendship Circle Adults. YAD is a program that gives young adults with special needs, ages 18 – 26, an opportunity to have fun and hang out with friends in a comfortable and safe environment. Through a series of community service oriented activities, participants learn the satisfaction of giving back while gaining vital social and vocational skills. FC Adults is a monthly program centered around Judaic holidays and themes, where adults with special needs gather for a social evening filled with fun activities, games and delicious food.
Gulfstream Goodwill Industries Day Training Program (Transitions) https://www.gulfstreamgoodwill.org/day-training-services. Transitions is a day program for adults who have developmental disabilities. Gulfstream Goodwill operates Transitions Programs in West Palm Beach, Stuart, Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach. Participants may attend the program one to five days per week. Transportation services are offered in conjunction with Gulfstream Goodwill’s Adult Day Training and Employment Services programs in Stuart, Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach.
Hab Center of Boca Raton’s clients have increased opportunities to engage in activities that will help them develop in the areas of: socialization, daily living, self-advocacy and health/wellness. The program provides training in the activities that increase client’s level of independence and exposes them to education, culture, art, sports and other fun activities.
iCare Nature club for 18+ with special needs. Through this welcoming and inclusive environment, members build confidence, have fun, and expand upon their social life and develop new interests.
JARC, Jewish Association for Residential Care Safety Net Access Program provides persons with special needs the opportunity to participate in social, recreational and educational programs that promote independent choice, skills building and socialization.

Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services – Welcome Home Program – Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center. The program provides a supportive environment to improve independent functioning for those living with persistent mental illness, improving life skills, social skills and employment skills.
Special Olympics Florida – Palm Beach County. The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
